$1.47/gal Gasoline

According to the National Academy of Sciences gasoline can be made from coal at a price of $1.47 per gallon.  The reason this is not being done in the US is that the amount of carbon emissions is twice that of petroleum based gasoline. Currently large scale production of gasoline from coal is being produced by China, South Africa and soon to be followed by India.

Gasoline is created by chemical conversion of a feedstock.  This feedstock can be oil, natural gas, coal or biomass/biocarbon. If biocarbon were used as a feedstock the gasoline produced would be carbon neutral.
