Carbon Cycle Diagram 2

By using biomass (amount X) to produce energy, we reduce the amount of fossil carbon (black block) entering the atmosphere by about X that we would normally get by burning fossil fuels.  Plants will, without intervention, decompose into methane and carbon dioxide, which will then enter into the atmosphere. This is a waste of its stored energy.  The biomass fuels are thus not adding any additional carbon to the atmosphere.
